Roncesvalles and Westminster
Roncesvalles and Westminster

Roncesvalles is a bit of a mess. They're working on sidewalks, sewage, streetcar tracks and a whole whack of other things. Strangely enough I sort of like it like this. There are far less cars and they have to drive real slow. It's a pain for the store owners, but I think they'll ultimately benefit from the new plan. Well I hope they do. I can totally imagine it as a pedestrian mall.

This is the courtyard of the Church at Westminster and it's very indicative of what I like in composition and lighting.

The first thing that struck me was the blue garbage bag and semi-blue contents, the white plastic hanger, the blue can of paint and the blue doors. There's something about their placement that almost seems contrived, but it's not. There's definitely a narrative there, although it's not bound to be exciting ... it's still there. The donated clothes make sense, but what's with the hanger and the paint?

Another striking thing for me is the confluence of vertical, horizontal and perspective lines, exemplified by the expansion joints in the concrete sidewalk.

This image is about photography as documentation. This is pretty drab, and pretty accurate to how I saw it. To me that "true" depiction is the draw. I mean I love the manipulation of people like Jeff Wall and Andreas Gursky, but these sort of images have just as much intrigue for me. I find these chance compositions every bit as engaging as the elaborate story-boarded stuff. There's a conversation in that about the illusion of photography I'm sure.
